Wee Quilt Kits Block Of The Month October 2016

Wee Quilt Kits is a monthly subscription offering quilting supplies and material.  They are a Canadian company, which I love finding.  They have four different plans to choose from, Fat Quarter, Block, Mini, and Wee Quilt of the Month.  Plans start at $8.00 a month for the Fat Quarter and go up to $50.00 for the most expensive.  Shipping is free.  Items included vary with the plan you choose but do give you things you need or want if you’re quilting.  This was another one I picked up with a discount and I went with the Block of the Month.  I am a beginner quilter and thought this would be an easy way to get a few blocks and instructions on how to piece them together to build up my skills.  Let’s see what block we get this month.

This months block is called Modern Luv.  I think it’s cute and even though I personally would have sent it out in February, I like it.  I’m a little confused by the fabric choice though.  While I get the red and white, the red is covered in musical terms, which doesn’t inspire the right feelings in me.

I love doing crafts and sewing has always been my first method.  I learnt at an early age and while I do go for other types this is my fall back.  My mother is a super quilter and that’s why I have some experience with it but most patterns and books are above my skill level.  This subscription is an easy way to get more proficient and end up with a whole quilt at the end.  They have a special on right now, just type “QUILTLOVE” in the discount field and get 30% off!

The sent another Thank You this month.  It is a thoughtful touch that adds to the subscription.

The square this month is called Friendship Star.  It has white, light blue, and dark blue fabrics.  Sometimes the instructions are more complex but this month what you see on the front is all there is.  Hopefully I can not screw this one up.

The whole thing I get from them each month is so small that they can ship it in an envelope.  On the corner is their info and this time on the back they have a Thank You.

The block pattern this month is Modern Celtic and while it looks easy enough I have some serious issue after I get the squares made.  I can’t join them properly ever.  I don’t know what it is I’m doing wrong but obviously something and what I end up with is never a square.  This in no way is a reflection on the instructions or kits they send out, just my own lack of skills.

This ships in a regular envelope.  It is quite flat and gets here quick due to being only a province over.

The block this month is called Shrooms.  I think it’s pretty obvious why.  At first glance I thought this was going to be a crazy difficult block but looking closer I see it is just a few squares and rectangles.  The instructions are pretty clear, even for someone who has lots of sewing knowledge but little quilting skills.

They include all the material you need for the square.  You still need to do the cutting and provide your own thread but that’s it.

This one ships in an envelope and when it arrived I had a horrible thought that it was only the pattern and I would need to source material.  Thankfully I was wrong.

There is no name on this block but it is a basic standard block that you see quite a bit.  The finished block will be 9″x9″ and the instructions are simple and accented with images to help you out.

The fabric is nicely matched.  While it is stripped for me already I still need to cut it into squares to begin stitching.  I’m a little surprised that I don’t need to cut triangles, which is what I’m used to doing.  This pattern says to just mark the diagonal and sti, cutting the excess after.  That seems way easier than the other way.
