Game Box Monthly September 2016

Game Box Monthly is a subscription box that sends you out a new tabletop board or card game every month.  They say they will ask you about your preferences and what you already own so they can not send you duplicates but that did not happen with me.  I did find the spot later on their website though.   Boxes start at $25.00 a month but do go down with longer plans.  Shipping is $10.00 a month, which is more than I would normally want to pay but I signed up for this one when they had a great deal on (50% off) and that balanced out everything so I went for it.  I love playing games and though it’s been a struggle to do with the kids being little and needy right now I’m hoping to get back into it soon.

This sub ships out in a plain box depending on the size of your games.  Inside is just what you are getting and nothing more.

They included a card for a Kickstarter campaign for a new card game.

They have an info card that tells you a little about the game and what bonus item  is included for the month.  Unfortunately I didn’t receive the second item.  I emailed them about it and they said it was an error on the card and there shouldn’t have been anything extra but they would send me something in my next box to make up for it, which I thought was nice of them.

Pinata-$27.90

This is a two player game for 13 and over.  It takes about 45 minutes to play.  The goal is to get as much candy as possible in matching colours.  Once you reach a certain level you get a medal card.  First to three medals wins.

The month had a value of $27.90, taking Canadian prices from Amazon.   I changed my preferences on the site to be more board game heavy instead of card game but it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference.   Now if I can just convince Hubby to play with me we’ll be all set.

They sent a card telling you about the main game and what you need to do to play.

Four Taverns-$32.77

This is a game for 2-4 players, aged 12 and up.  You try to have the most famous tavern in the land by sending adventurers on quests.  Whoever gets the most wins.  There are various types of characters and you need to use them all to beat the quests.  Each game takes 20-60 minutes to complete.

X Marks The Spot-$29.48

The bonus item this month is another game!  This is a tile laying game where you try to make an X pattern before your opponent does.  This one is also for 2-4 players, aged 10 and up, and takes 30-45 minutes to play.

The month had a value of $62.25, taking Canadian prices from Amazon.   I changed my preferences on the site to be more board game heavy instead of card game but it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference.   Now if I can just convince Hubby to play with me we’ll be all set.

There is a sticker letting you know what’s inside the plain box.

The inside was a surprise since the card telling me about the game covered everything.

The game this month is Sutakku.  This is selling for $14.16 on Amazon right now.  The game is for ages 14+ and while it can be played by one person it is a multi-player game as well.  It takes about 15 minutes to complete a game.  The object of the game is to stack dice to get the highest point total.  Of course if you topple your stack you get no points.  This might be a fun one to play.

The bonus item this month are Metallic Die from MDG.  They are solid zinc and finished in gold, silver, and bronze shades.  These are worth about $15.00 and are three different types of die.

The month had a value of $29.16, which again, if I’d have paid full price for the box would have not covered everything with shipping.  Thankfully I got that deal. I changed my preferences on the site to be more board game heavy instead of card game but I think that was after this was shipped so we’ll see if it makes a difference for next month. It has not but I guess this isn’t a card game so maybe they did.  Now if I can just convince Hubby to play with me we’ll be all set.

This one comes in a plain brown box with the logo on a sticker in the corner.  The boxes seem to vary depending on the size of the game each month.

16mm Acrylic Polyhedral Dice Set-$8.49

This is the combo attack blue/white w/gold numbers set.  It has most die that you could want or need for gaming.  I like the colour but rarely play any game that requires anything but a standard die.  These are good to have around though.

Wakanda-$14.99

Wakanda is a 2 person game for ages 8 and up.  You are trying to build the best totem pole based on village tiles.  This is not a game I have ever heard of but I think it might be fun.  It’s a quick game, only 15 minutes.  In a change from last month they also included a card detailing the game and what the objective is.

The month had a value of $23.48, which again, if I’d have paid full price for the box would have not covered everything with shipping.  Thankfully I got that deal. The box had the game, a small something tucked beside and that’s it.  There was no info sheet or welcome note or anything to make me think it wasn’t packed by a robot.

Jeff Siadek’s Desert Island-$22.77

This is a character card game that seems to be a sequel to one called Lifeboat.  It is standalone though, so that’s good.  The premise is that you are shipwrecked with a motley group of friends and enemies.  You need to collect items and defend your part of the beach, staying alive long enough to be rescued by a passing ship.  The game should take about an hour, is for 4-6 players, and ages 13 and up.  I like card games like this and since alcohol has on occasion been involved they can get crazy.

Box Band-Its-$4.99

I had to go finding these on the website but now that I know what they are, I think they are genius!  There are three different sizes in there and you stretch them around game boxes that might pop open.  It’s brilliant and the fact that it ha taken me this long to discover them just means I need to have more.

The month had a value of $27.76, which if I’d have paid full price for the box would have not covered everything with shipping.  Thankfully I got that deal.  I would hope to see a board game next time but we’ll have to wait.  Now if I can just convince Hubby to play with me we’ll be all set.
