Geek At Heart October 2017

Geek At Heart is a monthly subscription box that will send out 5-7 items based around a fandom theme.  They will send out a mix of home, beauty, and lifestyle products to make you feel the special connections to fandoms that are part of geek life.  They say they will focus on 2-3 fandoms per month that link to the theme that they pick.  You can go month to month for $24.95 or lock in for three months at a time for $23.65 per month.  Shipping to Canada was just over $20.00 for the three month period.  I am always wary when I order a geek or fandom box as the themes can vary into things I just don’t care about and then the box is wasted for me.  I decided to give this one a go as I am not receiving any geek boxes right now and I was feeling the lack.

I was a little concerned as I could see the corner of something poking out of the box when it arrived  Turns out it was just a piece of a shipping label and nothing that was part of the box.  The inside did have some type of powder all over it and smelled quite strong.

There is an info card that lists the theme for the month, “The Witching Hour”, with a list of all the items included.  On the back is a preview of the next month’s theme.

Hocus Pocus Sleep Mask

This might be my favourite sleep mask I have ever received.  It is awesome and purple and sparkly and the sentiment is perfect.  Sometimes things just arrive when you need them!

20171030_193945

Green Apple Cauldron Bath Bomb

Well, I guess I found the source of the mystery powder that was everywhere.  This is very cute and while you can’t really see it that well there is a spider embedded on the top.  I’m thinking you just drop the whole thing in your tub and then once it dissolves take out the cauldron, which is plastic.  There are no other instructions anywhere so I’ll wing it.

20171030_193919

Harry Potter Temporary Tattoos

But I’m a good witch!!!  This is a great Death Eater tattoo.  It obviously needs to be worn in the right company or people will not know what it is and think that you are just hardcore.  It is about three inches long and a little over an inch wide so it will be noticeable.

20171030_193957

Witches Bew Scented Incense Cones by Cherry Pit Crafts-$1.99

This little bag of five cones is the other part of the scent that hit me when I opened the box. This is a blend of patchouli, cinnamon, and cedarwood.  Patchouli is one of the scents that can be crazy strong but in this blend it’s okay.  Incense is hard for me to burn with the girls around but maybe after they go to bed I can burn one.

20171030_194040

Black Flame Candle Nail Polish by Spectrum Cosmetic-$12.95

This is a black polish with gold flakes in it that is part of the Halloween 2015 collection of this brand.  It is a great Halloween colour and I’ll probably wear it beyond that but I’m concerned that it’s from such an old collection.  The bottle I received is not gummy or old looking so maybe they just keep the old colours around and make them fresh.

20171030_194019

Bellatrix Lestrange Coaster by Simple Tweaks-$6.64

This coaster is made of natural stone with a cork backing so that it doesn’t scratch.  It has the Wanted Poster from the Daily Prophet.  It is very heavy and I like it.  I don’t have a coffee table so this will have to live on a bookcase until I need it.

This is my last box from them as I only had a three-month subscription. I am happy to have tried them out and have enjoyed the items that I received.  They covered the theme pretty well and the items are well crafted.  You can see that they take care to source quality items and the ones they make have the same level of care.  This month didn’t have the same problem as my first month with the T-shirt so that is good.  You can sign up for this box either on their website or find them on CrateJoy.

Bitchy Box TOM October 2017

Bitchy Box is a TOM box with a difference.  They don’t provide feminine hygiene items, but instead items to help you get through that time of the month.  They will fill the box with a variety of sweet treats, salty snacks, and handpicked gifts.  They endeavor to make sure you don’t stab anyone while you are riding some fun hormonal shifts.  They have 3,6, or 12-month plans available, starting at $66.00, plus shipping to Canada.  I had seen some other people’s boxes from them and thought they looked fun so I’m trying them out.

The box has its normal polka dot paper covering everything up.  Opening that, I found a scary Dracula looking up at me.

The info card lets you know that the theme this month is Bitchy Witchy.  It tells you all the items you will find in there, some recipes in the middle pages, and on the back are all their social media links.

Harebrained “Cunt Dracula” Period Panties-$8.00

These panties are great for a Halloween box.  While I know some people will be offended by the name of them, I personally don’t care.  This little dude is super cute and like the rest of the period panties I’ve received they are good quality and have a black lining to hide any accidents that can occur.

20171023_190245

Sinful Colors-Glow In The Dark Nail Polish-$5.99

How much fun is this??  You can’t even tell you have it on when there is light, it just looks like a shiny top coat.  I haven’t had any darkness since applying it but I’m super hopeful.  It says to apply two coats but since that is normal for any nail polish I’m not sure it matters.  I can’t wait to go to bed and see what my hands look like!

20171023_190226

Halloween Nail Decals-$1.95

These are perfect to go with the polish that was sent.  They are on a clear background so you can still see the nails underneath them.  There are just the ten but since you only need them for a few days this month that’s okay.

20171023_190303

Bone Zone Bootiful Skeleton Hands Barrettes-$?

These barrettes are insane.  They are huge and don’t have much in the way of a clip on the back.  Also, they are both the same hand so one will always be upside down on your head.  I can’t find them on the Hot Topic site which is where they are listed to be from so no idea on the price of them.

20171023_190333

Assorted M&M Fun Size Packs, Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups, Caramel Apple Pops

It’s not Halloween without candy and not having to rummage through what the kids bring in to find the good stuff.  I love peanut butter cups.  I can’t buy the treats because I will have none left to give out at all.  The caramel apple pops are a bit weird to me as the caramel is soft and gooey around an apple flavoured lolli.

20171023_190254

Gummi Brains

These are so soft and fresh that I’m in heaven.  Gummi candy is one of my weaknesses and this is the second time they have sent out some and I’m glad.  I’m more partial to the pink and red ones but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to gobble the blue ones too.

This month had another great selection of things.  I think that they really nailed the theme this month!  Everything in the box is made to make you feel better and less worked up about things that may go on for this time of the month.  I am not bothering with a value this month as half the box I can’t possibly price.  It’s enough to know that I’m happy and love everything!

Mighty Fix October 2017

Mighty Fix is a monthly subscription that sends you one product a month that can help your family live healthier.  Boxes start at $10.00 per month and there is a slight discount for a yearly join.  Shipping to Canada is $3.00 per month and free to the US.  You also have the option to add any items from their shop to your order each month with no extra shipping fees.  They also send out emails with member-only deals on items all through the month.  This was another one I had really wanted to try but they’ve only recently opened up shipping to Canada.  Once I found that out I jumped on board to see what I could get that would make my life healthier and hopefully easier too.

For the first time in a while, I didn’t get a flat envelope but a box.  Opening it up didn’t give much away, just a pile of packing peanuts.

They send a card each month that tells you what you can expect to find in your package for the month, why this is an item that is a change you need to make, and a few tips about it.  On the back, there is usually a recipe of some type.  This month it is two different options of a natural cleaner.

Meliora Glass Spray Bottle with Soap Flakes and Soap Flakes Refill-$8.99 & $0.43

This bottle of cleanser just needs to have you add some water and give it a good shake to dissolve the soap flakes that are inside it.  The extra little tube of flakes is enough for another two bottles of the mixture.  This cleaner works on any hard surface and it will be streak free if you remember to wipe until it is dry.  The soap flakes are made out of vegetable soap which is a combination of saponified coconut oil, glycerin, coconut oil, and water.

I’m very happy with the offerings this month.  This is a gentle way for me to clean the house and not get all the chemical smell and particles that float around. This is something we will for sure use. I’m getting to try some things I’m sure I would never just buy and they are easy ways to make simple changes to try and keep my home and family in better health.  I’m glad that they opened up to Canada and can’t wait to see what other crazy things they send me next.

Home Made Luxe Craft Subscription Box July 2017

Home Made Luxe is a monthly box that sends out everything you need to make a Pinterest worthy home decor craft for your house.  They include step-by-step instructions and there is a link to a video that also walks you through them.  Boxes start at $29.99 plus shipping and do go down with longer terms.  I signed up for this one way back on Mother’s Day during the CrateJoy sale and scored it for 50% off.  I am always looking for new craft boxes and ideas and these ones are a little different from what I’ve received before.  I have a big stack of these to get through but all the delays on reviewing them are mone and have nothing to do with any shipping issues or problems getting boxes.  They do provide shipping notices and often they send out surveys to see what craft you want to see in the next month’s box.

This sub ships in one of the largest boxes I’ve received.  It is fully branded and no matter what is inside, it’s always the same box.  Once I opened the lid I found everything packed carefully and looking neat.

The project for this month is Felt Flower Pillows.  These are much more to my liking than the project from last month.  They are very grown-up and pretty and will add a nice touch to my bed. The instructions are good and there are plenty of pictures to detail those words too.  They included a template to cut all the petals and circles needed out.  There is also a Bonus Craft that you can make, No Sew Fragrance Sachet.

20170712_201837

These are the materials for the pillow.  There are felt sheets, pillowcases, and glue sticks.

20170712_201854

For the bonus craft, they sent burlap lace ribbon, jute twine, and fragrance beads.

For my second box from this subscription, I’m much happier with what I received.  This is not a new crafting technique for me but it is not something I have made before.  All that I need to provide are scissors, a glue gun, a sharpie, and the pillow forms and the rest is included.  I’m glad that the box has improved from last month and I hope that they keep going in this direction.

Home Made Luxe Craft Subscription Box June 2017

This door hanger was included, I’m guessing because it was my first box.  It is a cute way to let everyone know you’re busy and on the back is a code to get a discount.

The project for this month is a Marbled Hexagon Clock.  I have to admit when I saw it I went, what the hell is this crazy ass thing from 1982?  It is not really my style of decor but I will make it and then it can just live in my craft room, where I don’t have a clock.  Marbling is not a craft technique I’ve ever done, so that is good.  The instructions are good and there are plenty of pictures to detail those words too.  They provide two different ideas that you can make depending on what you are needing or wanting in your house.  There is also a Bonus Craft that you can make by providing a few items yourself.  This time they provided some decorative duck tape (who spells it like that???) and show you how to make vases out of cans.

20170612_183242

Here is the whole pile of provided items.  There is a chalkboard clock face, a clock hands kit, white paint, paint brush, a feather, cardstock, paper plates, clock numbers, a sponge, chalk, and a battery.  The roll near the bottom is the David Tutera Lace Duck Tape for the bonus craft.

For my first box from this subscription, I’m not that thrilled with what I received.  I’m happy to try a new crafting technique but the finished product is not something I would ever make or buy if I saw it.  I like that there is only water and a hot glue gun that I need to provide and that everything else is included.  I have high hopes for the rest of my boxes from them and since it would be hard for it to get worse as a finished product it can only go up from here.

Fred’s Box Mystery Subscription Box October 2017

Fred’s Box is a monthly subscription full of things for kids 3 and over.  In the Mystery Box, you get a book, an Ooshie or Crayola funky shapes, depending on the age of the recipient, pencil, sticker, postcards, and some mystery items. You can get this box as a twin version to get double the goodies.  There is a straight Ooshies box that saves you from having to try to collect them one at a time as well, in 4 sizes.  Boxes start at $3.99 British Pounds and go up from there.  Shipping to Canada is 54 pence a month.  I decided to go with the Mystery Box for Bug and since her birthday is soon, I aged her up to 6 for the books.  They shipped out quite quickly after ordering and now we get to check out what’s inside.

This box is much better preserved as I got to it first!  It’s a little closer to what you can expect when you get your box.  I can tell right off the bat this one is going to be another winner.

20171011_184959

The book this month is a classic fairytale, Rapunzel.  With the amount of joy that comes from the Tangled series and movie, this story is a good fit.  It is also a good book for Bug’s reading level as the words are large and clearly printed so we can work on her reading skills as we go.

20171011_184900

The Ooshie is cute and I have no clue who he is.  He has a cape and an arrow on his head.  He also looks kinda pink instead of red but that could be the lights in the house.  He looks grumpy too so maybe he’s a villain.  If anyone can help me out, please do!

20171011_184949

We are back to having a pencil crayon in the box.  Teal is my favourite colour.  There are the postcards to fill in too.  There are four of them each time I just stack them to get the picture.

The mystery items are off the hook! We have a Frozen headband, a package of Scented Glitter Gel Pens, Frozen Barrettes, a pack of Disney Princess Trading Cards, and a My Little Pony blind bag.  It’s so insane!! I’m now 100% convinced they have a device that is reading my kids minds from all the way of in Britain.  The hair items are needed because my kids lose them like crazy, they love blind bags to the point that they watch the ridiculous opening videos online ALL THE TIME, and more Princess cards are wanted daily.

This box is great fun.  The girls are going to be very happy with all the toys in it and the book has already been given the thumb’s up.  There is an opportunity for creativity with the postcards, learning with the book, and play with the rest.  I can’t wait to see what future boxes from them bring us.  Fred’s Box run contests and have lots of special boxes you can get quite often.  If you want to check them out and get your own box of goodies click here.

Fred’s Box Mystery Subscription Box September 2017

If you can’t tell this month the girls got to the box before I was home and so I think this is everything that should be in there.  Nothing has packages anymore so I’m going to wing it.

20171019_193502

We got another pack of Disney Princess Trading Cards.  The girls love them and I am happy to have another pack to add to their collection.

20171019_193532

We have the always included postcards and pencil.  This month it is not a pencil crayon but a regular pencil.  It is still embossed with the box name and the girls like to have things that are just for them.

The other extra surprises this month are a slap bracelet, a Littlest Pet Shop toy, a Carebear bag hanger, and a collection of Shopkins rings.  All of these things are stuff that they like.  I know I say it every time but the people who curate this box KNOW kids.

20171019_193607

The Ooshie we got is the Penguin.  He’s so adorable and I sorta want to steal him and never have the girls know that he came to our house.  These little guys can go on the top of pencils or just be played with and squished as they are.

20171019_193730

We have had lots of enjoyment out of the books they have sent in the past and I like that they are slowly moving forward in reading level for Bug as well.  This one is for Early Readers and it is third in the Rainbow Magic Series.  It is Emily The Emerald Fairy.  It is a continuation of the series we received last month.

This box is great fun.  The girls are going to be very happy with all the toys in it and the book has already been given the thumb’s up.  There is an opportunity for creativity with the postcards, learning with the book, and play with the rest.  I can’t wait to see what future boxes from them bring us.  If you want to check them out and get your own box of goodies click here.

Love With Food Deluxe July 2017

Love With Food is a monthly subscription box that sends out organic, all-natural, or gluten-free snacks.  They want to help you to “Snack smart and Do good.”  They donate a portion of their proceeds to organizations that help end child hunger.  They offer three box types but only two are available in Canada.  You can get the Deluxe box or the Gluten Free box, starting at $16.50 a month.  Shipping right now is $3.99 a month since they just opened up international shipping.  If you really like your coworkers they have an office box for $99.  You’ll get 16-20 snacks a month,  meals given to children, and points earned to redeem for boxes or snacks.  I love getting snacks in the mail and to find ones that won’t completely destroy my weight loss attempts is a good thing.  I’ve been watching this one for a while and was so glad they now ship to Canada.  Let’s open it up and see if the wait was worth it.

So this is a really late review of this box but I just got distracted by the shiny new boxes that arrived after it did.

20170712_200155

Bandar Garlic Naan Chips

I randomly grabbed naan chips in the grocery one day and became addicted.  They are so delicious and I have to say they are now my favourite type of cracker.  These ones are garlic flavoured but that isn’t going to stop me from loving them.  These won’t last very long.

20170712_200206

The Daily Crave Veggie Chips x 2

Veggie chips are a close second to those naan chips in my loving list.  These chips are gluten-free, vegan, kosher, non-GMO, and have no dairy, artificial flavours, or hydrogenated fats. The packaging is a fake newspaper that tells stories about people who do things while after eating these chips.

20170712_200215

Cosmos Creations Salted Caramel Premium Puffed Corn

Okay, now this makes three things right off the top that I love.  Popcorn would easily be one of my desert island foods.  Caramel corn is not really my favourite flavour but I do like it.  This package is made with non-GMO corn, is gluten-free, has no HFCS, and supposedly has no hulls or kernels in it.

20170712_200229

Dick & Jane Educational Snacks States & Capitals

I received the president’s version of these cookies in a box a long time ago.  I don’t know that I learned much from eating them but they tasted good.  These are made with whole grains and are vanilla flavoured.

20170712_200222

Belgian Boys Mini Cookie Stash

These are something else that I’ve had before and they are amazing!  I have only had speculoos in these so I can’t say if it’s that flavour I like or if it’s the cookies but I am not going to turn these down.

20170712_200240

Nothing But The Fruit Real Fruit Bites in Concord Grape & Raspberry Chia

These sorta look like dog treats.  I guess they are a type of fruit leather that has been cut into cubes.  Each package contains a full serving of fruit.  These are also vegan and non-GMO.

20170712_200251

Emmy’s Organics Dark Cacao Organic Coconut Cookie

This feels like a soft round brownie bite.  It also happens to be grain and gluten free and vegan.  Sometimes these little nuggets are super tasty and sometimes they are crap so we’ll play the game with this one once I eat it.

20170712_200301

Aloha Organic Protein Bar in Peanut Butter & Jelly

This seems delicious!  And then I read the back and it says it’s made with peas and pumpkin seeds.  I’m still hoping for the best and I’m sure it can’t be that bad.  The peanut butter taste should cover most of the odd flavours I think.

20170712_200306

Teddy Soft Bakes

I don’t know if this is one giant bear in a box of a bunch of smaller bears.  It says it has a chocolate filling and it’s made by the teddy Grahams people.  I like Teddy Grahams, well the chocolate chip ones anyways.  This may end up being a snack for the girls, who I think will like it.

20170712_200313

Watusee Organic Chickpeatos

These are also something I’ve had before and I think they are disgusting.  I don’t really like chickpeas at the best of times and adding tomato to that is worse.  I don’t really have anything else to say about these.

20170712_200321

Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops

They included two of these in the box, both blueberry tooberry flavour.  These will go straight to the girls candy bag.   I just can’t be bothered to eat sugar this slowly anymore.

20170712_200328

Ocean’s Halo Coconut Seaweed Strips

I think these might be horrible.  I find the things with seaweed to be so fishy tasty that I vomit.  I do like coconut and seaweed in like sushi but just on its own, it’s not so nice.

I am so happy to be getting this box and finding snacks that are at least in the realm of better for me.  They have great shipping notices and the boxes come wrapped in plastic so no one can peek in and nab your snacks.  This was my last box and I have enjoyed the variety of snacks that I got to try.  Not all were winners but the majority I ate and liked.

Sunday Mood Box September 2017

Sunday Mood is a monthly box that includes a mix of indie brands, vegan beauty lines, all-natural bath & beauty products, handmade jewelry, cool niche household items, art, specialty teas, and healthy treats.  They offer two different sizes of box, a sample box that has 2-3 deluxe samples and 1 full-size item or the full-size box that contains 4-6 full-size products.  They are priced at $25 and $44 but do go down with longer plans.  Shipping to Canada is $10 per box.  This is another one I picked up on Mother’s Day for 50% off or I would never have given it a go.  There was an additional Customs charge when it arrived, so that is something to keep in mind if you order.

20170927_200643

There is not an info card in this box so I need to guess at why and what all of these things are.  Everything arrived in safely, even though there are glass bottles in there.

20170927_200657

Chamomile Roses Organic Full Leaf Tea-$4.21

This is a relaxing tea blend.  It has chamomile and rose petals and that seems to be it.  It smells nice and they recommend that you serve it with a touch of honey for sweetness.

20170927_200718

Moon Phace Collective Dark Moon Resting Mist-$7.00

This mist smells really nice, it makes you want to spray it all over yourself.  It is a blend of patchouli, ylang-ylang, and orange blossom.  You can spray this on clothes, linens, hair, yourself, and just into the air.  You use this to gain peace, tranquility, renewal, and support after times of stress and release.

20170927_200736

Andrea’s Organic Market Luminous Skin Green Tea & Jasmine Facial Scrub-$4.84

This is an exfoliating scrub made with almond and grains.  You mix one tablespoon of this powder with water to create a liquid that you can use daily.

20170927_200811_001

Small Vial of Amethyst

This picture won’t turn for me but this still gives you a good idea of what they shipped out. I am aware that crystals have healing properties but it would have been very useful to know what they were hoping to promote with this one.

20170927_200931

Organic Luminescents-$?

I have no idea what this is.  There is nothing like it on the Etsy Shop.  It might be lip balm or eyeshadow.  It is a soft cream that has a slight shimmer.  I honestly have zero ideas.

I am just okay with the box this month. The items are fine but without a card or some idea of what I’m getting it’s a downer for me.  The value for this month is not available since I can’t identify parts of the box.  That is okay but I’d rather not have had the Customs fee on top.  With the discount I got I feel like the Queen of the world with this one.  I love it!!!  If you go to check it out they do have a code on their site that says will get you some type of a discount upon checkout.

Geek At Heart Septemer 2017

I love the purple box that this arrives in.  I do hate those damn squiggles though.  I know they are a recyclable way to keep things safe but they get everywhere when you try to do anything.

They have a card that has a list of the items included, and the theme, Literary Sanctuary, on one side and on the other is the theme for next month, The Witching Hour.

20170929_193436

Lemony Snicket Sugar Scrub by The Geeky Apothecary-$5.17

In a shocking twist, this scrub smells like lemons!  Who would have guessed?  It smells very nice though and they have an assortment of other geek-themed scrubs if Lemony is not up your alley.

20170929_195338

Hermione Granger Bookmark by Bibliophile Prints-$2.91

How awesome is this??!!  Since I have at least 72 books on the go at once and dog-earring a page is a major sin I am always looking for more pieces of paper or some type of thing to stick in there.  Harry Potter is one of my favourite nerd themes.

20170929_193407

T(ea)BR Button and Sticker by Fictional Flavors-$1.94

I am going to be honest and say that I do not understand the name of this at all.  Once we are past that though I think these are super cute and while I don’t wear buttons really I will find a use for that sticker.

20170929_195351

Beauty And The Beast Notebook

I can’t put a value on this one as there is no info on where it came from.  The pages inside are blank and well attached to the spine.  Notebooks make me happy so this one will join my collection of pretties.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events Book Tote

This is another one that I can’t value but that I love!  It has quite possibly one of my favourite book quotes on it.  This will probably become my library bag.

20170929_193457

Harry Potter Restricted Section Candle

This is a 100% soy candle that is scented with hazelnut coffee and old library.  It is oddly sweet and I’m hoping that burning it produces a less icky smell.  I like the idea of this candle but my first impression is not that great because of the smell.

For my second box from them, I am still very impressed.  They covered the theme pretty well and the items are well crafted.  You can see that they take care to source quality items and the ones they make have the same level of care.  This month didn’t have the same proble as last month with the T-shirt so that is good.  You can sign up for this box either on their website or find them on CrateJoy.
