BarkBox January 2015

Archie’s favorite delivery came today.  BarkBox is a toy and treat box just for pups. Prices start at $29 per month but go down to $18 if you choose a yearly plan. Shipping to Canada is $5/month.  Along with the products part of your subscription cost is donated to dogs in need, so along with fun stuff for your pooch you are also helping out dogs that might not be as pampered as yours. You can select from tiny, small & cute, just right, and big & bold sizes to get a selection of products best suited to your dog. The theme this month is Ice Age!

20150126_100811 20150126_100838

I know I say it each time but I just love the paper!  I think it’s so cute and fun and it makes my day when I see it.  Underneath I couldn’t tell too much beyond a snowflake.

The reverse of the card lists the items included along with their retail prices and codes to use if you want to order them again.

Caru Real Pork Stew-$6.00

Neither of our dogs really eat soft food but I think I will feed it to our older dog who recently had all but 6 of her teeth pulled.  She eats dry kibble fine but this will be a nice treat for her.

Aussie Naturals Salmon Skins-$8.00

These smell. A lot. Right through the sealed bag.  I know many people feed their dogs fish parts because of how good they are for their coats but I am having a crazy recoil reaction to actually having to touch these even though I’m not normally squeamish at all.  I think it’s the smell, kind of a bad fish ick thing.  I’ll just get Hubby to do it as I have complete faith that Archie will love them.

BarkMade Snowflake-$11.00

This toy has squeakers in a few of the points and crinkles in the others.  Archie has given it a few chews but now the baby has decided it should be her toy so I’ll have to give it more time to see if this one is a win or not.

Butcher’s Block Bones Trachea-$2.00

Yes you read that right….it’s an actual trachea.  It looks so disgusting but I give it a five minute time frame to be devoured.

Max & Ruffy’s Blizzard Bites-$5.00

These are a molasses and ginger flavored dog biscuit.  They totally smell like a gingersnap and look a bit like one too.  They are wheat. corn, soy and GMO free and anything in them is organic. Archie had a taste and likes them.

This was another good box from them, filled with things the dogs like.  It’s nice to get a new toy each month since that’s about the time it takes for Archie to destroy the previous one.  If you’d like to try out BarkBox send me a message and I can email you a link to get a FREE!!! box for yourself.

Beauty Box 5 January 2015

Beauty Box 5 is a subscription box that sends out 5 products or samples every month. They might be makeup, beauty accessories, hair, skincare, fragrance, body, or nail products. It is another of the cheaper ones at $12 a month or even less if you sign up for a longer term. They do charge $3 a month to ship to Canada though.  This box has been a bit hit or miss lately.  Last month was better so I’m hoping they are on an uphill swing. 20150126_160419 The box is quite small but they always get everything in and the info card lists what you got, how to use it, and retail pricing. 20150126_160431 The back of the card. 20150126_160610 Hard Candy Kal-Eye_descope Baked Eyeshadow in Make Believe-$6.00 Full Size I’ve never used any Hard Candy makeup before, though I’ve seen it around quite a bit. It’s a bit hard to see in the picture but this is a blue/grey combo and I like it.  Just used dry it is great and not too dark, though you could use them wet for a super dramatic look.  It also has a good shimmer, and shimmer on my eyes is kinda my favorite thing. 20150126_160740 Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips French Mani in Gold Cabaret-$9.99 Full Size I’ve always wanted to try nail strips but because I have little nails I’m afraid they won’t fit, just like fake nails, which are always too big.  The point of that ramble is that I’m glad to see these and to try them, even though I’m pretty sure the whole french mani thing makes them more difficult to apply then if they were just a solid color. 20150126_160544 Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout-2.5mL $8.00 This mascara is supposed to add drama, length, and thickness to your lashes.  Yes please!  It’s a pretty small sample but enough for a week for sure since it recommends three coats.  Any mascara is a win for me since it’s a daily wear item and this way I am stocking up for a while. Update!!!!  SO once I opened this to use it I found it was completely dried up. I’m sending them an email to see what if anything they will do about this but it is useless. New value $0.00.

20150126_160451   Softsoap Nutri Serums Vitamin E Body Wash-50mL $3.19 Not very exciting but useful.  Don’t really have much else to say about this.  I can buy it at my regular grocery store. 20150126_160709 Hard Candy Take Me Out Liner in Sushi-$5.00 Full Size This is an odd package.  The liner is only about half the length and the rest is just some old school cigarette holder I guess.  That being said, I like the color and while the lead is a bit soft it goes on smooth.  I’m okay with this product. This months box has a value of $32.18 and included 3 full size items.  While the body wash is kinda meh, I like and will use everything else.  For some reason this box took much longer than normal to get here but it turned up and all is good with the world. Now if only the rest of my boxes would find their way home……..

Dive Bar Shirt Club January 2015

Dive Bar Shirt Club is a monthly subscription that sends out a limited edition t-shirt from a random bar every month.  Each shirt is only available for that month and then that’s it.  Their tag line is “T-shirts from the best bars you’ve never heard of”. Shirts are $22 a month unless you need XXL or XXXL sizes then add $2.50 and $3.50 respectively. Shipping outside of the USA is $5.  They are just a reoccurring subscription so you can cancel anytime before the next payment is due. We’ve been lucky in that every shirt so far has been a winner with my Hubby.

20150126_160122 20150126_160131

Each month includes a post card from the bar telling their story and some pictures of the place.  This month’s bar is Maury’s Place in Sutton, Nebraska.  It looks like a hole in the wall but less creepy then some of the bars they’ve showcased.

I happen to really like this shirt.  It amuses me and it’s definitely fun.  This one is again a vintage tee style.  Only one of the shirts we’ve received so far hasn’t been, and that one attracts lint like you wouldn’t believe.  The vintage ones are super soft and have that faded worn in look.  All the types are good quality though, with minimal shrinkage.

This subscription has been a good find.  There are only a few subs out there for men and most are more then I’m willing to pay.  This one is affordable and even with the exchange not much more then you’d pay for a shirt in a store.

Embellished Boxes January 2015

Embellished Boxes is a monthly box that sends you what you need to create two crafts. They focus on using items that you have around your home or that are inexpensive to purchase.  You get instructions and everything you need to complete the two projects. Subscriptions are $14.32 a month including shipping.  Even better is that Embellished is a Canadian company.  I have not been disappointed in any of the projects they’ve sent me so far.

20150122_113717 20150122_113730

This box comes nicely wrapped up.  Under the paper is everything you need. Even accesories.

The materials list and a quote that seems to give a very general idea of what to expect.

This months projects are a Floral Photo Display and a Sand Bottle.

You get the clay to make the base, a cutter for the clay, rolling pin for the clay, and wire to make the stand and hold the photo.

For the other project you get the bottle (plastic), a funnel and a pack of four different colored sands.

Each project only has three steps to complete and everyone has turned out so far.  As soon as I have a few moments to myself I’m going to get these whipped up.

Kiwi Crate January 2015

Kiwi Crate is a monthly craft and discovery box for children 3-12. They have recently expanded their options to boxes for specific ages or you can chose the regular one which is for all ages.  Kiwi crate is $19.95 a month but goes down with longer subscriptions.  I have seen plenty of deals out right now for them so I think you can even get lower pricing or free boxes if you search around. This month’s theme is Let’s Bake.

First look is always the same, beyond the changing projects.

The magazine this month has the usual stories and fact but also included some cutouts to make your shipping box into an oven.  Very cool!

Project one is My Frosted Cake.

You put together a cake from foam pieces with clay icing and stickers for decorations.  This one is listed as high on the messy scale, medium in grownup involvement and utilizes creating, exploring and fine moving skills.  Since we’ve just had Bear’s birthday the timing was good on this and Bug is excited to “bake”.

Project two is My Chef Dress-up.  It includes a chef hat and apron to decorate.  This one is low on the messiness scale, low on grownup involvement, and provides exploring, creating, and gross moving skills.  Bug has her own apron already but one she gets to decorate and cover in glitter crayon will probably be a bigger hit.

This month I think will be another win for Bug with Kiwi Crate.  She really enjoys the crafts and in the true test of anything for kids, actually plays with the stuff after it’s made.  They offer some individual boxes on their site so we may have to pick up a couple of those to cover the time between boxes.  The quality of the products is better then thw crafts I can pick up at the dollar store too.

If you would like to sign up I’d appreciate it if you’d use my link:

Phone Case Of The Month January 2015

The end of the month is coming up again quick and I still have a bunch of boxes that haven’t arrived yet.  This week I am hoping for e.l.f Beauty Box, Ecocentric Mom, BarkBox, Bare Bliss Box (which is actually Decembers box), MommiesFirst (though I’m not sure why they are sending me another one), Lip Monthly, Beauty Box 5 (which is super late), Dive Bar Shirt Club, Danklo, Beauty Joy, and Avalai.  That’s just insane.  I have no idea what has happened this month. There hasn’t been a holiday in three weeks to mess things up and yet I have a huge list.  Hopefully my mailman doesn’t freak out if most show up on one day.  Now on to the review for today.

hone case of the month sends you out a new case for your phone once a month.  You can get a new case for your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy right now but they are looking to expand that if there is a large amount of need for other brands. They have also just started providing cases for the iPhone6 too.  The case is $10 per month and shipping to Canada is another $5. While they are no where near as protective a case as an Otterbox they are a fun way to switch things up.  I was stunned at how much lighter my phone was with this case as opposed to the Otterbox I had on there. Never realized it was so big till it was gone. You get a case, a little info card, and a treat!

Each case comes in a little bag.  I use them to store the previous months case.

I an really happy with this month’s case.  The theme is Traveling to Happiness and the camper van says Be Happy on the side.  Also I got a pixie stix which is fun, even if a pure shot of sugar is unnecessary. The only downside to this case, and it is a slight downside only, is that it is super smooth.  Others have been somewhat rubbery almost so they didn’t go shooting out of my hand when I don’t have a good grip.

Birchbox January 2015

The box that started it all in the States has finally made it’s way to Canada.  With Birchbox you get monthly boxes of five personalized beauty samples, tailored to your profile. They promise to help you try cult brands, up-and-coming lines, and everything in between.  They also say you will never receive the same product twice.  Birchbox runs at $10.00 per month plus $4.95 shipping but you can get yearly plans for $100.00 plus shipping as well.  This makes it one of the more affordable boxes out there and since this is only their second box in Canada it’s still new and exciting.

20150120_135243 20150120_135320

Brichbox ships in a pink outer box.  Inside is another box that is quite sturdy and Bug loves to fill them with her treasures once I empty mine out!

20150120_135333 20150120_135340

This first look gives nothing away but the theme.  On the reverse of the card is your products, what to do with them  and full size retails.

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask-14gx2 $7.50

While they promise not to send you the same product twice they will send you a different product from the same company.  Since I liked the last product from this company I’m okay with it but it’s just a heads up that they do repeat brands.  I like that I received 2 of these so I can really form an opinion.  With my hair being so long I am always looking for things to make it healthier and masks are great for that.

Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre-5mL $2.67

This is a multi-use product for all skin types.  This can be your moisturizer, make-up remover, repairing mask, after-shave cream, or even a baby care product.  It smells slightly medicinal but absorbed quick and was not greasy at all.

Joie Folle de Joie Eau de Parfume-2mL $2.05

I really like this scent.  It’s just a touch floral, which is my preferred scent and not overly strong.  The only problem is a full sized bottle is $116.00.  I will have to just be sparing with this sample.  Birchbox sent out a questionnaire about perfume and if you want you can opt never to receive a sample in your box or if you don’t mind you will never get more then six perfumes a year.

ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick in Dusk Till Dawn-$7.67 Full Size

This is actually sold in a three pack but it is a normal sized lipstick.  It’s a super neutral color that glided on so easily! The last few lipsticks I’ve received have felt dry but this one is nice.  It is supposed to be long wearing so I’ll have to give it try for work to see how it goes.

Tocca Crema da Mano in Cleopatra-30mL $5.00

This is a blend of grapefruit and cucumber and it smells…..odd.  I want to like it but I’m not sure.  It soaked in really fast and my hands feel nice so I guess it’ll be okay.  Not my favorite but acceptable.

This months box had a value of $24.89, which is about $10.00 more then I paid for it.  Once you review all your products on the site you get points that translate into money to purchase items so while it seems like just an okay box it works out to be good.  Also any of the products in your box have free shipping for the month if you just have to have more. I have been happy with both of my Birchboxes so far and can’t wait to see what I get next.  The American boxes do have a few more perks like selecting one of your samples and a mens box but I am hopeful once they get settled in Canada the same types of options will be available.

If you want to sign up send me a message and I can give you a link or you can visit here.

Topbox January 2015

Topbox is a Canadian beauty subscription that ships you 4 samples every month.  The shipping is free, which is nice, but there is tax based upon your province.  This still makes it one of the cheapest boxes out there at $12 per month.  Topbox normally comes is a cardboard container but you can chose to receive your products in a reusable organza bag for even less waste, which is my choice.  They also offer special boxes that you can put on your wish list and you may get them or you’ll get the regular box. Lately they seem to be shipping out earlier in the month then they used to which is nice, since a lot of my boxes come in the last half.

20150114_153108 20150114_153116

The front and back of my bag.  I could see something bubble wrapped and was really hoping it wasn’t another nail polish.

The info card.  The other side just lets you know that they have a special edition LouLou Winter Box for sale on their site.  This side tells you about the products, the full size price and where you can purchase them if you like it.

MeMeMe Cosmetics Cheek & Lip Tint in Cherub’s Blush-$10.00 Full Size

Cheek stains are not my favorite way to apply blush.  I seem to lack the ability to get it rubbed in before it starts to dry and then have weird streaks on my cheeks.  I keep practicing in the hopes I can figure it out but tend to use these more as the lip tints then anything else.  I do like the color though, it gives a natural looking flush that is compleately wearable if I can get it on right.  Also I am thrilled it’s not a nail polish……

Lise Watier Lift & Firm 3D Duo Serum 24 Hrs-2X3mL $11.70

I haven’t tried these yet but they are supposed to do many wonderful things.  Skin will appear firmer and smoother.  It will also be denser and more supple.  Wrinkles will also be reduced.  While I hope it works it’s a bit of a double edged sword as there is no way I would ever buy something that is this expensive.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide(TM) Moisture Cream Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF30-7mL $8.40

Holy what a handle!  I think that is the longest product title I’ve ever had to type out.  Sunscreen is one of those things that I know I should wear everyday but if it’s not already in one of my products I never think to put it on.  My kidlets get coated anytime we go outside but for myself it’s an afterthought.  This has a thinner formula then your standard sunscreen and absorbs really quickly.  It smells nice and fresh too!  If I can remember to use it I think I will like this.

Eyeko Mascara Off Eye Makeup Remover Wipes-$12.00 Full Size

This is a 10 pack of wipes and I’m not sure why I have never tried something like this before.  I use a cotton pad and liquid makeup remover and it’s such a pain.  You squirt too much out, then it leaks into your eye off the pad, then it stings till you can get a cloth up to wipe it off…..this seems so much easier.  These are available at Sephora as well so that makes getting more easy too.

This months bag had a value of $42.10 and two full sized products.  I’m so glad that this month was better for me.  I still may end up cancelling this one if it goes back downhill in products for me but this one definitely made up for some of the letdowns.  I can’t wait to try the wipes and both of the skincare products.  The stain is the only so-so item but that is only because I’m incapable of using it properly.

If you want to join Topbox send me a message and I can shoot you a link or you can visit them by clicking here.

My Visit To The Emergency Room

Hello everyone!

It’s been a little bit since I’ve been able to get here and make a post, but I promise I had a good reason.  Over the weekend I was struck with pain and had to take myself to the ER and ended up having surgery and being hospitalized.  Thankfully it was minor as far as surgeries go but still it was the first time I’ve ever been hospitalized so it was a little on the scary side.

It all started Monday evening when I was having some pain in my upper abdomen.  I thought it was just a bad case of heartburn so took some antacids and had a bath and went to bed.  I’ve gotten this pain a few times a year for many years and it has always just been a few hours in the evening and then done. Tuesday morning it had subsided to the point of being almost gone so I gave it no further thought.  Tuesday evening it was back and it was worse.  I tried the antacids again along with a hot shower but that did nothing for me.  I gave in to the pain and decided to go to the mediclinic.  However since I made this decision at 9:00pm I was limited to three clinics still open.  I checked with my regular one and they had already reached their patient limit and were no longer accepting new walk ins.  I stopped off at the one near my house and they had also stopped taking new patients because their health nurse had to leave.  I was left with one clinic and a rapidly dwindling time frame.  As I pulled up to my last hope I could see the receptionist inside closing the curtains and I was thinking I was out of luck.  Thankfully when I went in and asked if I could still see the doctor she said yes.  I was the only person in the waiting room so got in right away and described my pain and the location and the Doctor decided to check me out for gallstones.  Because of the time there was nothing he could do right then but give me a prescription for an antispasmodic to try to stop the pain, tell me to take it with some OTC pain meds and give me a requisition for bloodwork and an ultrasound.

The pain did subside enough for me to sleep and I took myself off for blood work the next morning.  I couldn’t get in to the ultrasound place till Thursday morning and as usual they tell you nothing just that the doctor will have the results and you can talk to them.  Thursday night I was in pain again and even went to the most trustworthy giver of advice….Google… find relief. The consensus of the internet was that gallbladder pain could be relieved quickly by taking 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and drinking them with 1 cup of apple juice. Let me say that this is one of the most horrible tasting things I have ever had but I was in so much pain and the prescription and pain meds were doing nothing so I went for it.  I tried to get some sleep in the hope that I would get the call from the doc in the morning with some results and a possible cure.  Shortly after 11pm I was up and knew I needed to go to the hospital.  I woke up the Hubby and called my mom to come watch the girls and off we went.  We arrived at around 11:45pm and I got in line.  The waiting room wasn’t full but there was a bunch of people there before me.  I was able to get actually registered and seen by the intake nurses at 12:50am and since everyone is taken by severity as opposed to arrival sat down for a wait.  I was called in to see the doctor at 3:30am and they took down my symptoms and listened to what I been through in the last few days. They started me with an IV port and gave me a version of the antispasmodic I’d been on and a dose of morphine.  Now I’ve never needed to have any serious drugs before but I have seen the effects of morphine on friends and family so I was waiting for the relief. Imagine my surprise when none was forthcoming. After a second dose with no effect they switched me over to a different pain killer that is stronger.  Apparently there are some people, including myself it seems,  that have no reaction to morphine.  Things you learn at odd times.  Once they got my pain lowered it became a waiting game for bloodwork results and needing the ultrasound place to open up for those results as well.  Shortly after 8am things got moving.  My tests showed I had 2 gallstones and a possible infection, causing me the pain.  The general surgeon was called in to give an opinion.  The resident showed up first, took notes, and said he’d talk to the surgeon.  Just before lunch she came and gave the news that my gallbladder was coming out.

Since now all that was left was to wait for an opening in the operating room, Hubby went home to grab a nap and switch off with Grandma.  Grandma stopped by to drop off a few things I needed and a quick visit and I spent some time napping and wishing for food and drink.  They took pity on me and started me on IV fluids at 1pm and took me upstairs to the surgery floor around 2pm.  Right after I got up there they said get ready you are going for surgery.  In the time it took me to go to the bathroom and start to undress they bumped me.  The nurse figured an emergency had come in and that was the cause.  I was left on waiting list so I couldn’t eat or drink anything since I could go in anytime.  I finally got bored of playing on my phone around 7pm and ordered up the tv in my room for some entertainment.

After a fairly restful night interrupted only to be awoken for them to take more blood I was told at 8am I was going in.  They wheeled me down to the OR and I got myself settled on the table.  I was expecting the sleeping drugs to work like it is when you faint, how everything goes black from the outside in, but I was breathing deeply looking at the lights and then I was waking up in recovery.  I don’t remember any dreams really but I do recall sitting in a diner chatting with Elvis so it must have been good!  I was back in my room by 11:30am and food followed shortly.  Jell-o has never tasted so good.  The rest of my evening was spent visiting a bit and watching tv and napping.

I was allowed to go home Sunday morning with instructions to watch that I eat nothing greasy and to not lift anything.  One of those is easier to follow then the other.  So in the end everything worked out good and I’m feeling much better and that’s why I’ve been absent from posting for a bit.  I have a few boxes waiting for me and I hope to get those up here for you soon.  Have a good day!
